Good, crisp, swinging instrumental “tropical jazz” by New York-born pianist Robert Navarro. He’s joined on this date by Venezuelans Richard Bravo on percussion and his brother Jerry Bravo on bass. Nice solos all around, and fun arrangements of classics like “Watermelon Man” and “Night In Tunisia”. Several talented guests add to the proceedings, the stand-out being Pedro Alfonso on violin. Alfonso brings a playful, almost ‘gypsy jazz swing’ feeling to Navarro’s driving original “Caminando” – a great start to a solid album. Guest guitarist Rainer Marin adds some squealing electric guitar to the Latin standard “Sabroso”, reminding me of the Santana band in its mid-70s fusion days. Navarro’s classical training is evident in the danzón-inflected “Campanitas de Cristal” by the seminal composer Rafael Hernández, and a Cole Porter tune adds a jaunty, jazzy hue to the proceedings on “You’d Be Nice To Come Home To.” Cool album cover art too.
